Daito Manabe…

May completely freak you out. He’s a mathematician and multi-media artist who experiments with the relationships between man and machine. He recently performed at the Big in Japan event in Australia (a cultural exchange between Japan and OZ sponsored by Ksubi and Kirin- winning combinations all around) and did all kinds of crazy things with electrodes and music, to an ecstatic reception.

Fascinating, and certainly a welcome antidote to the recent influx of post-apocalyptic themed art. Too many painted faces and piles of sticks and shreds of cloth going around. I’d rather be with Diato Manabe in the self contained robot/human habitat he’ll be living in after global warming destroys the earth.

Also of note on the man v. machine front is this invention that surfaced at the last TED conference. They’re not the only ones working with the technology, but this woman’s firm may be the closest to creating a truly commercially viable extension of the human senses. Some people go so far as to say that within a few decades sensory aids will not only be commonplace, but will be implanted in chip form directly into our brains effectively increasing our mental capacities. Superhumans? How ponderous…
